Drinks For Your 2024 Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

Get Ready to host your 2024 Solar Eclipse Viewing Party with these ideas!

On Monday, April 8, 2024, North America will experience a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event that no one should miss – a solar eclipse. This is a rare opportunity to witness the moon pass between the sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface and creating a breathtaking sight. The path of totality will stretch from Texas, Arkansas, Ohio, New York, and Vermont, giving people in these areas a chance to see the incredible moment when the moon completely covers the sun and reveals the sun’s corona – the outermost and hottest part of the sun’s atmosphere.

However, it is crucial to remember that looking directly at the sun is never safe, even during an eclipse. Therefore, observing the Eclipse through approved solar filters or indirect viewing methods is highly recommended to avoid serious eye damage. But don’t let that deter you from enjoying this spectacular event.

Let’s celebrate the Eclipse with an early happy hour, even though it’s Monday. I have some drink suggestions that you might like for a solar eclipse viewing party. You can choose from some still wines, non-alcoholic option and two cocktails: Spelbound Wines’ white Sangria recipe by Spellbound winemaker Peter Krauter and “El eclipse de abril,” a fun recipe I tweak!

The wine team takes inspiration from the lunar calendar’s celestial spirit, reminding us that all life’s phases are worth remembering.

 Spellbound White Sangria

White Sangria is a delightful cocktail that will add an extra touch of charm to your solar eclipse viewing party. It’s a simple and easy recipe that includes fruits like lime, lemon, orange, strawberries, apples, and nectarines, mixed with apple brandy and a bottle of chilled Spellbound Chardonnay, finished off with some ice, sparkling water, and fresh mint. You can also serve it with a half-moon, raspberry star cookies, or other eclipse-themed culinary delights.

  • Add apple brandy and muddle again to combine for 30 seconds. Add strawberries, apples, and nectarine, sr to incorporate. Then add wine and stir once more.
  • Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding lemon or lime juice for acidity or fruit. Stir to combine.
  • Add ice and stir once more to chill. Serve as is or with a bit more ice and mint. Top off glasses with sparkling water.

Serve with half-moon and raspberry star cookies or other celestial-themed culinary delights.

El eclipse de abril cocktail

Looking for eclipse cocktails, I came across a tempting recipe that incorporates Aperol, tequila, and mezcal, all Mexican spirits: The Eclipse.

El Eclipse was Initially crafted by the recently closed iconic hotel and restaurant The NoMad in New York City, it is named for the moon’s color during an eclipse. So I tweaked the recipe and created my own with a more tart finish. Check out the recipe here.

A non-alcoholic option

Duché de Longueville Cider

And, for a non-alcoholic option that’s still fun, you could try a French Sparkling Cider.

Duché de Longueville Cider is produced in Normandy, using only French apples. Despite being non-alcoholic, this cider boasts bold and refined flavors of invigorating fruit. The unique blend of apples and characteristics of the Normandy region come together to create a delicate balance between sweetness and bitterness. Moreover, this cider is entirely natural and does not contain any added sugars.

The next total solar Eclipse won’t be visible in the Northeast until 2079!

So, please mark your calendars, grab your approved solar filters or indirect viewing methods, and join the celebration by witnessing this awe-inspiring moment of the Solar Eclipse. Don’t miss out on this chance to witness a celestial event that won’t happen again in North America for many years to come!
