A Snapshot of the Rocim Revelation

While I was nestled in my tasting nook, the virtual “where” was the heart of Alentejo, specifically Herdade do Rocim. The star of the show was undoubtedly Pedro Ribeiro, the dynamic and deeply passionate winemaker at Herdade do Rocim. He and her wife, Catarina Vieira, are the vigorous couple behind their winery. Catarina, plays a pivotal role in the winery’s commercial and marketing efforts. Together, they form a formidable team. Their shared vision is clear in every sip of their remarkable wines.

During the event, Pedro shared his philosophy with such clarity and enthusiasm. We embarked on an educational webinar, with a focus on Herdade do Rocim’s commitment. They aim to showcase the region’s unique terroir through indigenous Portuguese varietals. Their groundbreaking approach to winemaking combines heritage and a progressive vision. They are particularly noted for their pioneering work with amphorae.

What is an amphorae? According to the Oxford Dictionary, amphorae is a tall ancient Greek or Roman jar with two handles and a narrow neck. Wine making in countries like Greece, Georgia and Portugal historically used the amphorae to serve and, or age wines.

The winery itself is a striking example of modern design harmonizing with the natural landscape. Their stunning estate is located in Vidigueira. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation. They focus particularly on amphorae wines. Pedro proudly spoke about the annual “Festa da Talha” (Amphora Festival) they celebrate in Alentejo. This vibrant event is held in November. It truly celebrates their ancient winemaking tradition. They open the talhas (large clay amphorae) and share the new vintage with the community. It’s a beautiful expression of cultural pride and winemaking passion.

A Symphony of Flavors: The Wines We Tasted

Pedro Ribeiro is a leader in the discourse of freshness and aging wines in amphora. His dynamic approach elevates the character of Alentejo’s noble Portuguese terroirs. It highlights the vineyard-specific traits. Understanding this philosophy was incredibly insightful.Through it all, was an exploration of wines that celebrate the region’s freshness, elegance, and minerality. These wines are looking toward a future of sustainable winemaking. This future is already making waves on the global stage.

Our tasting journey through Herdade do Rocim’s portfolio was nothing short of revelatory. Each wine had very particular nuances, making an entrance on every sip, a testament to Pedro and Catarina’s dedication.

Herdade do Rocim Mariana 2024

This vibrant white wine was an immediate crowd-pleaser. On the nose, it revealed an invigorating burst of citrus, especially grapefruit and lime. These were intertwined with delicate floral notes and a hint of green apple. The palate was crisp and refreshing, with a zesty acidity that danced on the tongue. I detected bright lemon curd and a touch of saline minerality, leading to a clean, lingering finish. This is a wine that truly embodies freshness and is perfect for a warm summer’s day.

Herdade do Rocim Alentejo DOC Amphora Branco 2024

This wine was my favorite and when I think the tasting truly reached another level. The Amphora Branco was an intriguing departure, showcasing the profound influence of amphora aging. The nose was complex. It featured aromas of dried apricots and honey. There was a fascinating yeasty, almost nutty quality. This was alongside subtle floral notes. The palate was textural and layered, with a rich mouthfeel. There was a beautiful balance between a subtle oxidative character, reminiscent of aged white wines, and a vibrant minerality. Flavors of bruised apple, savory herbs, and a touch of salinity unfolded, culminating in a long, memorable finish. This wine is a testament to the purity and expression that amphorae can impart.

Herdade do Rocim Mariana Tinto 2023

Moving to the reds, the Mariana Tinto presented a captivating aroma of ripe red berries, uicy cherries and raspberries. It also had subtle undertones of garrigue and a touch of spice. On the palate, it was medium-bodied with soft, well-integrated tannins. Flavors of red currant, plum, and a hint of licorice emerged, leading to a smooth, approachable finish. This is a wonderfully versatile red, easy to drink but with enough character to keep you coming back for more.

Herdade do Rocim Amphora Tinto 2024:

Our final wine, the Amphora Tinto, was equally compelling. The nose was earthy and brooding. It had notes of dark plum and black cherry. There was a distinct mineral character, almost like wet stone. There was also a hint of exotic spice and dried herbs. On the palate, this wine was powerful yet remarkably elegant. The tannins were firm but beautifully refined, offering excellent structure. Flavors of blackberry, fig, and a touch of balsamic intertwined with an intriguing saline note, creating a truly unique profile. The finish was long, complex, and thought-provoking. This wine truly shows Pedro’s dedication. He showcases the depth and nuance of Alentejo’s indigenous red varietals. He does this through the ancient art of amphora winemaking.

The Highlights: Freshness, Amphorae, and Sustainable Vision

The entire webinar was a highlight, but a few key takeaways truly resonated with me. Pedro’s unwavering dedication to freshness in Alentejo wines was inspiring. He eloquently debunked the myth that Alentejo wines are solely about power and concentration. I enjoyed how he is demonstrating the elegance and vibrancy that can also define the region’s character.
The discussion surrounding amphora aging was particularly captivating. Pedro explained how the porous nature of the clay vessels allows for micro-oxygenation, contributing to the wines’ unique texture and evolution without imparting oak flavors. His passion for this ancient technique, revived with modern understanding, was infectious. The annual Festa da Talha further underscores this commitment, a beautiful blending of tradition and innovation.
Finally, the underlying commitment to sustainable winemaking at Herdade do Rocim was evident throughout the presentation. From vineyard practices to their winemaking philosophy, Pedro and Catarina are clearly building a legacy. They respect the land and its future indeed.

A Toast to Alentejo’s Future

This virtual tasting with Pedro Ribeiro and Herdade do Rocim was an opportunity to experience some exceptional wines. It was a masterclass in Alentejo’s potential. Pedro and Catarina are not just making wine. They are crafting liquid expressions of their passion. Their land and their vision for the future of Portuguese winemaking are also reflected in their craft. Herdade do Rocim places emphasis on indigenous varietals. They pioneer work with amphorae. Their unwavering commitment to freshness and sustainability keeps them at the forefront of the global wine scene. Moreover, I left the webinar with a deeper appreciation for Alentejo and a renewed excitement for the innovative spirit that thrives within its vineyards.
