Why Mexican Wines Matter: A Call for Awareness and Responsible Growth
The conversation around Mexican wines is changing, driven by passion and a rapidly growing international profile. As a young Mexican professional and wine enthusiast, I’m dedicated to bringing awareness of these exceptional wines of Mexico to the Northeast of the US. Yet, this growth comes with a challenge that demands the attention of both the industry and authorities.
The Analytical Lens: Carlos Puig and the Valle de Guadalupe Challenge
Renowned writer and actor Carlos Puig published an important analysis that sheds light on the rapid development of the Valle de Guadalupe (Mexico’s most famous wine region) specifically concerning the latest Mexican Wine trends and accompanying real estate growth.
Puig’s core concern, which should alarm authorities, is the speed of tourism and real estate expansion.
While Puig’s critique of the current state is sharp, the title of his article sparked a crucial question in my mind: Does someone care about Mexican Wine?
From my vantage point, the answer is a resounding Yes. The passion is here, but the development of the terroir and surrounding culture must be sustainable. I am not in government, but as one committed individual, I see the difference between simply selling a bottle and cultivating lasting, conscious growth.
Bringing the Story of Wines of Mexico to the World
As a Latina in the wine industry, the founder of a Wine Club dedicated to the Latina Community, and a blogger, I’ve had access to countless events. Being in New York, a global epicenter of wine culture, it was baffling to find wines of Mexico virtually absent.
My mission is to change that.
For five years, I have worked tirelessly through my social media channels to spread awareness of Wines of Mexico. This effort continues to grow under the banner of Vinos con Alma (Wines with Soul). Moreover, I spread the wine education through formal wine classes. Book your next session with me.
Mexican Wines: Collaboration and a Published Book
The commitment to Mexican wines has reached new heights:
- Website Launch: We launched the first version of the Vinos con Alma website to meet the growing demand for information on wines of Mexico. I have also launched a Substack letter to keep up with new producers and wines that I enjoy from Mexico
- Government Partnership: I am proud to share that in 2022, the Mexican Consulate in New York reached out to collaborate. We joined efforts and hosted an event to bring awareness to Wines of Mexico hosted in the Galeria Octavio Paz. We will continue to support and spread the history and stories of Mexican Wines in New York.
- A Published Voice: In 2023, I published my book on Amazon, which is now available. This further deepens the accessibility and understanding of our rich wine culture.
The Essential Path: Responsible Tourism
While I work to bring maximum visibility to Mexican wines, we must also ensure that we are establishing sustainable tourism practices.
Responsible Tourism means:
- Sustainable Practices: Creating and adhering to practices that protect the land, the vine, and the delicate ecosystem of regions like Valle de Guadalupe and newer wine regions.
- Cultural Respect: Honoring the traditions, culture, and people behind the bottle, ensuring that growth benefits local communities.
- Conscious Hospitality: Developing hospitality that is in harmony with the local environment and culture, moving away from unchecked, rapid development.
This is the only way to ensure the long-term health and authenticity of wines of Mexico.
