Wine Grapes: Verdejo, a lesser-known grape variety that is mainly cultivated in Spain

Verdejo is a lesser-known grape variety that is mainly cultivated in Spain. If you are familiar with it, you belong to a small group of wine connoisseurs. I came across Verdejo a couple of years ago when a salesperson recommended it at a local liquor store in Astoria, Queens. He told me that Spanish verdejo wine is only for connoisseurs. Verdejo wine taste fresh, green fruits and crisp. I was enchanted by its green fruit and citrus flavors, along with its medium-high acidity. If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, you will love Verdejo, although it is more crisp than other green wines.

Verdejo is the grape; DO Rueda is the Protected Designation of Origin.

The wines labeled ‘DO Rueda’ are made from the Verdejo grape. Even though exports of Verdejo have grown to the USA, it is still a lesser-known variety for many wine lovers. I encourage you to try this fantastic, light-bodied white wine!

You can find DO Rueda wines in almost every New York City and New York State liquor store. If you can’t locate them in the Spanish wine section, or if there is no Spanish wine section, look for another liquor store. Alternatively, you can purchase DO Rueda wines online. Below are a couple of links where you can buy these fantastic expressions of Verdejo, which the DO Rueda consortium has approved.
