Insights from the Cab Franc Forward Event ( and let me tell you why Cabernet Franc is New York’s Next Big Star)
New York, NY – “If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere,” Frank Sinatra sang, and that sentiment rings true for Cabernet Franc in the New York area and beyond. After attending the event Cab Franc Forward on February 4 at the iconic Prince George Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan, I couldn’t agree more. New York Cabernet Franc is the next big star for the Empire State. The unprecedented event drew 280 wine trade and media professionals and 245 enthusiastic consumers.
The energy at Cab Franc Forward event was indeed in a New York spirit, camaraderie at its best, and a true testament to the passion surrounding this dynamic grape. I knew this event would be special after exploring Cabernet Franc across Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and even the Finger Lakes region and visiting countless wineries. The achievement of many areas of the New York wine scene for Cabernet Franc grape is undeniable, and as the saying goes, things are done big in the Empire State.

A Celebration of Cabernet Franc’s Diversity
Thirty-five New York wineries gathered in Manhattan to showcase Cabernet Franc made in New York. It is an understatement to say that each winery is crafting its Cabernet Franc wines with passion, precision, and character. The collective finally makes a statement, highlighting New York’s Cabernet Franc as the premier red variety.
Cabernet Franc is the state’s most widely planted red vinifera grape, with 638 acres under vine. Hence, the event featured an incredible range of styles. From crisp and bright expressions to rich and complex wines, the tasting offered something for every palate.
During the walk-a-round wine tasting , it was wonderful reconnecting with some personal favorites. My husband and I are huge advocates for Cabernet Franc; its versatility and complexity constantly excite us. The Macari Horses Cab Franc 2021 Pét-Nat was a standout since it is the wine we toasted during our marriage ceremony at their Meadowlark North Fork location. We are captured by its well-made effervescence and vibrant red stone fruit-refreshing flavors. It’s always a pleasure to revisit wines you love and see how they evolve.

Discovering New Cabernet Franc Gems and Rediscovering Old Favorites
But the event wasn’t just about revisiting old favorites but also about discovering new ones. The 68 Cellars Cabernet Franc Apassimento was a revelation, demonstrating the grape’s potential for depth and intensity. It was a powerful and memorable wine.
We also uncovered some exciting new gems, like the Atwater Cabernet Franc, crafted with local wild yeast. Atwater Vineyards has an approach to sustainability and experimentation and we are true admirers and fans. We have spent many afternoons at their winery in the Finger Lakes, and we have created fond memories there; hence, there is always a guarantee that they will have something new that will surprise us and, most likely, that we will like. Atwater Cabernet Franc offered a unique, terroir-driven experience, showcasing the specific characteristics of the region.
The Hudson River Valley made an impression on us with The Rose Fjord 2023 Cab Franc. Its fresh, aromatic profile and crisp medium acidity were delightful on our palate and a testament to the creativity of Matthew Spacarelli, whom we have wanted to meet for the longest time since we have been following his portfolio at their family winery, Benmarl, for almost ten years.
What struck me most about Cab Franc Forward was the sheer enthusiasm in the room. It was clear that winemakers, sommeliers, and wine lovers alike share a deep appreciation for this varietal.

My connection to Cabernet Franc runs deep.
From exploring the vineyards near the Long Island Sound to the nearest ones from the Hamptons to discovering the wineries with breathtaking views of the Hudson River in the Hudson Valley up to the Finger Lakes, I’ve witnessed firsthand the passion and detailed care that goes into crafting Cabernet Franc wines. From different styles ranging from the Pet Nats to the bold aged Cabernet Franc starting from the vineyard, I’ve seen local winemakers’ dedication, commitment to sustainable practices, and unwavering belief in Cabernet Franc’s potential.
I particularly loved the motto ” In New York Cab means Franc,” making a hito and differentiation from Cabernet Sauvignon. In wine jargon, typically, “Cab” stands out for Cabernet Sauvignon. Hence, noting the differentiation of this campaign to highlight Cabernet Franc is what I consider absolutely important to praise. Cabernet Franc is the grape that’s setting them apart and is setting a testament to the hard work and dedication of New York winemakers who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with this grape.
The event, CabFranc Forward, solidified my love and commitment to evangelizing about this grape. Moreover, it highlighted the incredible connection between the wine regions of New York. Thirty five wineries joined forces to showcase the creativity and innovation around Cabernet Franc!
