The Carolinas are making their mark on the American wine landscape. This effort is quiet but powerful. And leading the charge with a refreshing twist on tradition is Erik Martella, whose wines are redefining what we expect from the region. Small batches. Crafted in North Carolina with Muscadine Grape.

Erik Martella worked in California for nearly 20 years as a winemaker and winery manager. In 2018, he left the world of corporate winemaking. He eventually, settled in western North Carolina. In July of 2024, Erik launched his eponymous wine brand. He took a part-time role as Lecturer at the Appalachian State University Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences. Erik holds an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Loyola Marymount University. He also holds a master’s degree in food science with enology emphasis from U.C. Davis and a viticulture certificate from Surry Community College.

With those qualifications, made me even more curious about the Yadkin Valley wine scene. Hence, tasting Martella’s wine just made sense for a wine lover like me. Recently, I had the pleasure of trying Erik Martella’s Pét-Nat Sparkling Rosé. If you are curious like me, let me tell you more about it.

The Unique Characteristics of Erik Martella’s Pét-Nat Rosé

Erik Martella Pet Nat

This isn’t your everyday bubbly, and that’s precisely what makes it captivating. Erik Martella’s Pét-Nat Sparkling Rosé of Noble is produced with the méthode ancestrale.

Made from Noble muscadine grapes grown in the heart of the Yadkin Valley, this rosé glows with a hazy blush hue. It offers an inviting color that draws you in. On the nose, you’ll be greeted by vibrant aromas of grapefruit zest and delicate springtime florals. The palate delivers on this promise with vibrant acidity that dances on your tongue, perfectly balanced by its gentle fizz. It’s a wine that truly bursts with character, offering a refreshing and authentic taste of the Carolina terroir. If you’re looking for an unfiltered sparkling wine experience, this is it!

What is the méthode ancestrale.? This centuries-old winemaking technique truly highlights the “natural” in naturally sparkling. Unlike more common sparkling wines, secondary fermentation happens in a tank or separate bottle. Pét-Nat completes its primary fermentation in the bottle. This ingenious method traps the natural effervescence. It results in a lively, gentle fizz. The wine remains beautifully unfiltered and full of personality.

Why do we highlight Pét-Nat Sparkling Rosé of Noble?
