How Mexico City Became a Mixology Mecca?

Mexico City’s vibrant nightlife has always been magnificent, but something extraordinary has been brewing over the past decade. The Mexican mixology revolution has sent margaritas and cervezas to the back seat—we’re talking about the rise of mixology, where skilled bartenders transform cocktails into an art form. Mexico City has embraced this global trend with open arms, resulting in a cocktail scene that’s shaking things up and drawing international acclaim.

From Apothecary to Alchemy: The Evolution of Mixology

Before we dive into Mexico City’s cocktail revolution, let’s take a quick trip back in time. The roots of mixology can be traced back to the 1800s, with Jerry Thomas often credited as the “father of American mixology.” His pioneering work, “How to Mix Drinks,” laid the foundation for the craft.  Early mixologists were like apothecaries, experimenting with herbs, tinctures, and spirits to create medicinal and pleasurable concoctions.

Over time, mixology evolved alongside cultural trends. Prohibition in the United States forced the art underground, leading to the rise of speakeasies and a focus on concealing the taste of poorly made liquor. Post-prohibition, cocktails became simpler, often relying on sugary mixes. But in recent decades, there’s been a global resurgence of interest in classic techniques and innovative flavor combinations.  Bartenders are now like alchemists, pushing boundaries with artisanal ingredients, homemade syrups, and a deep understanding of the chemistry behind a perfect drink.
