The Exceptional Quality of Bodega Garzón’s Refined Tannat Wines – A One-on-One Review

Bodega Garzón, a leading winery in Uruguay, is distributed in over 60 countries worldwide. I have been familiar with Garzon wines for a long time, given that they have been available in North America for as long as I can remember. Also, I have come across them also in other countries throughout Latin America. Moreover, I have always been drawn to their labels!

Christian Wylie, who has served as the General Manager of Bodega Garzon has been instrumental in ensuring that Garzon remains the top winery in Uruguay despite being available in numerous locations. Actually, the renowned Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards recently recognized the outstanding achievements of Wyle naming him the Wine Executive of the Year. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire team at Garzon. It is truly an honor to witness such remarkable success. I am confident that Garzon will continue to be a leading winery in the years to come.

Bodega Garzón Tannat Series

Refined Tannat

Bodega Garzón  develops high-quality, refined Tannat wines from the unique terroir of Maldonado and state-of-the-art winemaking methods.

Tannat, has become one of the most prominent grapes in Uruguay. It is a red grape historically grown in southwest France in the Bordeaux appellation of Madiran. Nowadays, Tannat is considered the “national grape” in Uruguay. The Tannat Wines produced in Uruguay have a softer style with smooth tannins and blackberry, black cherry, and plum flavors.

Among Uruguayan Tannat producers, Garzón takes a distinctive approach to the variety. For instance, they craft Tannat wines with tannins that are pronounced but finer in texture, marrying with lightly fragrant dark fruit flavors. Bodega Garzon’s philosophy and methods set its Tannat apart.

What sets Bodega Garzón apart?

  • Terroir: Garzón’s vineyards have shallow, stony, and well-drained weathered granite soils. The annual rainfall is 1,100 to 1,200 mm. Most of Uruguay’s Tannat vineyards are inland with more water-retentive clay-based soils. Vigor can interfere with grape ripening in this region.
  • Viticulture: Bodega Garzón grows over 2,000 hectares of imported French Tannat. These are clones from Madiran, planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare. The vines spread over 1,000 small parcels of land, covering 10 km.
  • Winemaking: Garzón Winery uses a gravity system to produce quality wines while maximizing energy resources. The wines are fermented in concrete tanks and aged in untoasted French oak casks, producing pure and distinct wines.

A one-on-one with Bodega Garzón Tannat

Uruguay is located in South America, and until I traveled there, I had to have a one-on-one with two of the refined Tannat of Bodega Garzon. I prefer to enjoy my wine in the comfort of my home, savoring it slowly and taking notes of my impressions. This way, I can revisit it later and have a second glass to further explore its nuances and flavors. It has been a while since I last tasted the Tannat series at this winery. The Single Vineyard Tannat left me impressed with its exceptional quality.

Hence, on this on-one with Tannat, I collected a few reviews below:
