Winedivaa’s Guide to Wine, Wanderlust, and Unpretentious Luxury in the Hudson Valley
There’s a certain magic to the Hudson Valley. As a wine educator with roots in a culture that values hospitality and vibrant flavors, I’ve found that this region isn’t just about escaping the city; it’s about connecting with a place that embraces both its rustic charm and its modern, sophisticated spirit. It’s a place where you can find world class wine just a stone’s throw from a family run farm, and that duality is what makes it a must-see.
Where to Eat and Drink in the Hudson Valley
The Hudson Valley’s culinary scene is a mirror of its diverse landscape. When it comes to wine, the region is full of hidden gems.
My go-to is without a doubt Robibero Winery in New Paltz.

It’s the kind of place that feels like a friend’s backyard, but with seriously good wine. The greens pace is perfect for families, and the pizza and wine pairing is a masterclass in laid back elegance. I’m especially fond of their Cabernet Franc vintages from 2023 and 2024. They have a beautiful structure and express the local terroir so well. And their most celebrated wine, “The Stray,” a 100% Estate Cabernet Franc, has cemented its place in the regional spotlight, taking home the coveted Best in Show award at the Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest. Come for the Cabernet Franc and rejoice with their Sparkling Wine in a Brut Style and their white Sienna which is on the medium-dry spectrum perfect to drink solo or pair with american classics.

This recognition confirms what I’ve always known: that the true soul of winemaking is found in places that are both passionate and unpretentious.
For a more bustling experience, Benmarl Winery is a classic for a reason.

While it can get busy, especially during their popular festivals, the views are breathtaking and the atmosphere is still family friendly. I have enjoyed their wines for many years. Try their Cabernet Francs, their Seyval Blanc and lately their Natural Method wines have been delivering a different profile. Book your tickets in advance or visit during the week for a more quiet experience.
Fjord Vineyards is another great option.

Their are known for its focus on sustainable practices and high-quality, small-batch wines. They recently winery in the Hudson Valley. The space is limited. Winery encourages to make reservations ahead of time. Their Albarino is fruity on the nose and mineral on the palate. It definetely remind me of the Rias Baixas style but with a bit more clay notes. I am fond of their Dry Rose and their Cabernet Franc.

For dining, look beyond the vineyards. New Paltz offers a plethora of options, from casual eateries to fine dining experiences that celebrate the farm-to-table ethos the region is known for.
Where to Stay in the Hudson Valley
As a loyal Hilton Honors member, I always appreciate the predictable comfort and cleanliness of their properties. The Home2 Suites Poughkeepsie is a fantastic example of the Hudson Valley’s hospitality. The staff is genuinely welcoming, the rooms are pristine, and the hot breakfast is a reliable start to any day of adventure. The Homewood Suites Poughkeepsie is another excellent choice, offering that same level of comfort and service. While I’ve had less luck with other local chain hotels, the Hilton properties consistently deliver a clean, comfortable, and friendly experience that makes me feel right at home.
For those seeking a more curated, design-forward experience, the region is full of stunning boutique hotels and inns. Look into places like The Maker Hotel in Hudson, known for its eclectic and luxurious design, or The Abbey Inn & Spa in Peekskill, a former convent transformed into a magnificent hotel with a full-service spa.
Beyond the grapes, the Hudson Valley is an autumnal dream.

Apple picking is a must-do, and my favorite spot is Weed Orchards & Winery. What I love most is the sheer variety: you can pick apples, pumpkins, and even flowers. The views are spectacular, the service is perfect, and there’s a tranquility to the property that feels like a true escape from the noise of the world. They even have a selection of goods available indoors, so you don’t have to venture into the fields if you prefer. This farm-to-table experience, from picking your own food to enjoying a glass of wine made on-site, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the region.

Other activities include exploring the charming towns of New Paltz and Beacon, hiking the trails of the Shawangunk Ridge, or visiting the world-renowned Storm King Art Center, an open-air museum that blends art and nature in a truly stunning way. You can’t skip the trails at Lake Minnewaska particularly a view of the Gertrude’s Nose or the beautiful falls around Peter’s Kill river.

The Hudson Valley’s style is a mix of rustic-chic and understated luxury.
Think of polished leather boots paired with a cozy knit sweater, or a simple A-line dress layered with a denim jacket. The key is comfort and functionality, but with an eye for quality materials and thoughtful details. The aesthetic is inspired by the landscape itself. The earthy tones of the fields, the deep greens of the forests, and the vibrant hues of fall foliage. This is a region where you can feel perfectly at home in both a designer coat for a dinner out or well-worn jeans for an afternoon of apple picking.
The Hudson Valley is a natural haven for wellness.
Beyond the calming experience of a walk through a vineyard, the region offers numerous opportunities for self-care. Many of the boutique hotels, like The Abbey Inn & Spa, offer full spa services. You can also find wellness retreats that focus on yoga, meditation, and healthy, farm-fresh cuisine. For a simple and profound moment of self-care, a quiet walk through Weed Orchards, with the scent of fresh apples in the air and the sun on your face, is all the therapy you’ll need. It’s a reminder that true wellness isn’t always about a fancy spa. It can be as simple as reconnecting with nature and the land.
