Why Midtown’s Ayza Wine Bar Tops the NYC Charts ? By Martha Cisneros Paja
Editors Note: I first published this article in 2024 but I have revisited the wine bar in May 2026 to confirm that my review is accurate and I found myself impressed since like a good wine, it has gotten even better with time.
There is a distinct creative thrill in watching a wine venue evolve. In a culinary landscape as transient as New York City, longevity is rare. Evolution, however, is the real triumph. Ayza Wine Bar, an anchor in Midtown Manhattan since 2007, is a masterclass in that exact evolution.
I first stepped through Ayza’s doors in 2012. I returned in 2015, checked in again in 2021, and just last night (May 24, 2026), I found myself back at their tables. Tracking a single establishment over a span of fourteen years gives you a unique perspective. I’ve watched their space adapt, their hospitality refine, and most importantly, their menu grow from simple accompaniments into a thoughtful, expansive culinary program.
For anyone who believes Midtown lacks a serious, deeply intentional wine destination, Ayza completely shatters the narrative. Here is why this gem sits firmly at the top of my NYC wine bar charts.
The Location: An Oasis in Midtown Manhattan
Conveniently located at 11 W 31st St, Ayza occupies a strategic slice of the city. Midtown is often saturated with high-volume tourist traps or rigid corporate lounges. Ayza manages to feel entirely separate from that frantic energy. It functions as an upscale, intimate oasis—making it just as perfect for an intense industry catch-up as it is for a relaxed, celebratory evening.

The Philosophy: Wine & Food as a Unified Experience
As a wine educator, my highest praise is reserved for venues that treat pairing as an intentional, sensory synergy rather than an afterthought. Ayza treats the relationship between the glass and the plate as a cohesive narrative.
If you are a lover of fine wines and artisanal chocolates, the signature Wine and Chocolate Pairing at Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar (@ayzanyc) is a revelation you cannot miss. However and over the years, their kitchen has expanded its culinary scope beautifully. The current menu features a dynamic range of small and large plates engineered to interact with the structural components of wine—matching acidity, balancing fats, and elevating subtle fruit profiles.
Ayza offers a curated escape from the city’s frantic pace. The wine list is intentionally unique. It features a significant selection of sparkling, rosé, and white wines. Additionally, a boutique collection of international reds is available. Moreover, it is a space designed for intimacy, perfect for romantic dates and deep conversation.
The Atmosphere: Where Elegance Meets Comfort
Known for its impeccable service and welcoming ambiance, Ayza promises an unforgettable fusion of wine, chocolate, and refined American cuisine. Whether it’s a weekend brunch for a small group or an intimate milestone celebration, the venue strikes the perfect balance between high-end elegance and pure relaxation.
In the bustling NoMad district, Ayza serves as a true urban oasis. Its entrance is marked by a charming vintage-style trolley adorned with lush greenery and a visual “wink” to passersby in this busy neighborhood. Upon entering, the transition is immediate. Modern design meets classic warmth. Dark wood furnishings, plush seating, and soft, strategic lighting create a sophisticated, hospitable glow.
With a cozy capacity of 50 guests, the air is filled with the smooth sounds of jazz or melodic pop. This ensures every visit feels personal and exclusive.
A Curated Wine and Food Experience
The wine program features over 40 labels sourced from Italy, France, Spain, and South Africa and nowadays even New York. Each bottle is selected not just for its flavor, but for its “unique soul.” Highlights include:
The Premium Indulgence: A bold 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($16/glass, $70/bottle). This full-bodied red, with its intense tannins, is designed to elevate the flavors of their Filet Mignon tips. Personally, I loved to see St. Francis Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast in their wine list as I have an obession for red wines that you can chill.
Other wines that I will recommend
- Cote Mas Rose Brut Cremant de Limoux: This Sparkling Wine from South of France offers elegant bubbles and is a crowd pleaser
- Italian Pinot Grigio: Crisp and classic.
- South African Chenin Blanc: For those seeking something adventurous.
- Italian Montepulciano: Deep and evocative.

Exceptional Options for Every Occasion
Ayza offers luxury across a range of price points:
The Accessible Choice: A vibrant 2019 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc ($9/glass, $35/bottle). Its refreshing acidity pairs beautifully with the fresh herbs and tomatoes of their signature Bruschetta.
The Rosé Experience: The 2020 Ayza’s Côtes de Provence Rosé ($12/glass, $50/bottle). Light and fruity, it is the perfect companion for a selection of soft cheeses and savory crackers.
The dress code is smart casual. Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably yet stylishly to maintain the bar’s sophisticated vibe. While perhaps too tranquil for tourists seeking high-energy “sightseeing” activities, it is the ultimate sanctuary for those seeking a romantic dinner or a quiet moment of reflection.
Longtime locals call Ayza the “Hidden Gem of NoMad.” As another regular reviewer put it: “Ayza is a hidden gem where you can let the stress of the day melt away over a glass of delicious wine while creating lasting memories.”

The WineDivaa Verdict
Throughout the night, the hospitality is flawless. The staff understands the rhythm of service, giving guests the space to dissect the menu while ensuring that bottles are perfectly temped and pours are seamlessly timed.
Ayza Wine Bar isn’t just surviving the NYC restaurant circuit; it is thriving by choosing to grow better, not just bigger. Because of its uncompromising focus on the pairing experience, brilliant hospitality, and a menu that has beautifully matured over nearly two decades, it is a mandatory stop for any serious wine lover in the city.
