Wine Bars in New York City: A Local Wine Lover’s Guide
Are you visiting New York City or are you a local wine enthusiast? Then you need to know about the wine bars in New York City. The culinary and wine scene in NYC is truly unique. Moreover, the types of wine experiences you can have in New York are world-class. On one hand, the variety of wines you can find in the Empire State is exceptional, and the wine lists are often very sophisticated and well-curated. At the same time, in New York you can find everything from classic European wines to the latest from hidden and emerging regions, including trending organic and sustainable options. I’ve already done some research and visited several New York wine bars. Keep reading to discover more about their unique features and selections!
The Diversity of Wine Bars in the City
Diversity is almost everywhere in New York. In this sense, the wine bars in the city offer a great variety in their wine lists. For me, the best wine bars should also have delicious appetizers and light bites to accompany their wines. Although there are wine bars in almost every neighborhood, not all offer the best experience. I often read reviews on Yelp or Google, and while they are helpful, they often focus more on the food than the wine. Since I’ve received many questions on Instagram about which wine bars to visit in New York City, I thought I should do something to highlight my favorites.
My Favorite New York City Wine Bars
I’m often asked: what is your favorite wine bar in the city? While it’s hard to pick just one, some of my absolute favorites include:
Ayza Wine Bar: A Midtown Anchor of Evolution & Pairing Excellence
While Midtown Manhattan is rarely the first neighborhood that comes to mind for a curated wine pilgrimage, Ayza Wine Bar (11 W 31st St) completely shatters that narrative. Having tracked their journey firsthand since 2012, I’ve watched this staple evolve into one of the most intentional wine destinations in the city.
What sets Ayza apart in a sea of generic bars isn’t just its longevity—it’s a rigorous focus on wine and food as a unified, experiential pairing. The menu has expanded dynamically over the years, transforming from simple small bites into a thoughtful culinary lineup designed to mirror the nuances of their bottle list. Whether you are kicking off a session with a crisp, high-acid Crémant or settling into a velvety Sonoma Pinot Noir, the hospitality is exceptional, and the synergy on the plate is precise. For wine lovers demanding an elevated, experiential pairing right in the heart of NYC, Ayza sits firmly at the top of the charts. Read my complete review here.

Although I’ve lived in New York for quite a while, I haven’t had time to explore them all. I still need to continue exploring. That’s why I’m asking for your help. If you find any wine bar that you consider unmissable, let me know! I’ll be happy to check it out! I’m looking forward to visiting them and reading your reviews.
More Time in New York and Looking for Wine Activities?
If you have more time in New York and love wine, you should definitely visit the Long Island Wine Trails. Located in the East End of Long Island, New York, it’s a convenient trip to explore the local wineries. You might also get lucky and attend a WineDivaa Experience if I organize one during your stay in New York.
