Women Shaping the Modern Wine World

Sowing Success: Celebrating the Women Shaping the Modern Wine World

Even though I am interested in highlighting brave women in wine all year, March energy and meaning, the changing of seasons, inspires me to appreciate those who are part of a vibrant transformation. Some of these women are vital to their wine business as winemakers or leaders, innovators, and crafters of exceptional hospitality experiences.

Lulu Martinez Ojeda: Baja California’s Maverick of Natural Wine

Lulu Martinez Ojeda
Modern women in wine – Lulu Martinez Ojeda

Lulu Martinez Ojeda, who wrote the foreword of my book “Wines of Mexico,” has evolved into a true force of nature in Baja California’s Valle de Guadalupe.

Moreover, I have followed her career for years since I first heard about Lulu from her importer, La Competencia Imports. I was impressed by her wines and we even hosted a class for Latinas Wine Club together. Knowing her in a personal level and sharing struggles of being a women in wine give me the impression that even though our paths are so different we had shared struggles but the power of resilence is what keept her going. She was recently recognized as one of the most powerful women in Mexico, with such a good reason as she continues to innovate not only by crafting excellent wines but also first-class wine world experiences at her winery as it is her yearly festival event, La Bacanal.

Breaking Barriers with Natural Expression:

Lulu’s path started with her interest in French culture. Once in Bordeaux, she decided to pursue formal enological training. She learned through hands-on experience working alongside established winemakers at Château Brane-Cantenac vineyard in Margaux and absorbing the wisdom of the terroir. Her approach is reflected in her vibrant and expressive wines from the Valle de Guadalupe. Her winemaking approach to the wines at Bruma Vinícola follows a French method but in Mexican soils. On the other hand, her experimental project, Casa Jipi, has a more natural and organic style. She promotes indigenous yeasts, minimizes manipulation, and prioritizes sustainability.

At Bruma Vinícola, Lulu’s wines such as the “Plan B” wine series is an exploration of different varieties and techniques. With the series she showcases her experimental spirit. Her wines are known for their lively acidity, textured mouthfeel, and intriguing aromatics, offering a glimpse into the raw beauty of Baja California’s soils.

Lulu’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the vineyard. She’s a vocal advocate for responsible farming and environmental stewardship. She’s a trailblazer and a vital voice in the Mexican wine community. Her dedication to natural winemaking and unwavering commitment to quality have earned her widespread recognition, solidifying her position as a leading figure in the region’s burgeoning wine scene.

Women Shaping the Modern Wine World: Debra Mathy Crafting Elegance in Sonoma and Napa at Dutcher Crossing

Debra Mathy’s story is about following her passion for outstanding California terroirs. When she purchased Dutcher Crossing in 2007, she was fulfilling her lifelong desire to own a winery in Sonoma County. At the time, the operation comprised 35 acres and made five wines. Today, under Debra’s leadership and creative vision, Dutcher Crossing offers over thirty wines from various wine regions in Sonoma, Napa, and Mendocino counties and owns 75 acres of estate-signed vineyards.

Building a Legacy of Precision and Passion

Over the years, Debra has built a dedicated team of skilled winemakers, tasting room staff, and support personnel who all share her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to quality. The vintage penny-farthing bicycle featured on the label reflects Debra’s passion for cycling and collecting. It also serves as a tribute to her father, who encouraged her to follow her dreams.

As an honorary member of the Dutcher Crossing wine club for the past three years, I’ve enjoyed their exceptional vintages, particularly their Pinot Noirs from different vineyards. I have recommended her wines to my family and friends because, with every bottle, I know the quality expected from the various vineyards, vintages, and varietals will only deliver quality.

Dutcher Crossing Winery and Vineyards

As the owner of Dutcher Crossing, Debra’s focus on balanced and expressive wines. From Pinot Noir, to Zinfandel of single vineyards and even the Blanc de Blancs are a unique expression of the terroir and that’s what has had me hooked over the years. Excellence is Debra’s goal. Her dedication has solidified her position as a leading figure in the Sonoma Valley wine scene.
