A Historic Afternoon in Chelsea: Tasting the Iconic Spanish Wines of Familia Fernández Rivera, By Martha Cisneros Paja
When it comes to the landscape of Spanish winemaking, few names carry the monumental weight of Familia Fernández Rivera. As a wine writer, nothing quite compares to tasting history side-by-side with the visionaries who bottle it. On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, I had the honor of doing just that at Monsieur Touton Selection in the heart of Chelsea, New York.
We gathered for an intimate, private afternoon masterclass led by Olga Fernández Rivera and MªCruz Fernández Rivera, two of the three dynamic sisters currently steering the winery. Familia Fernandez Rivera is a world-renowned agricultural and winemaking empire. Most likely, you have seen their Tinto Pesquera near you. Moreover, for collectors and everyday enthusiasts alike, understanding how these sisters bridge ancient Ribera del Duero and La Mancha traditions with modern precision is the ultimate key to discovering Spain’s finest pours. Here is how this extraordinary tasting unfolded.

Exploring the Unconventional Whites: Albillo Mayor and Airén
We kicked off our tasting by shattering the myth that these legendary red wine estates only master Tempranillo. The whites presented were nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing indigenous varieties with immense character and vibrant acidity.
Tinto Pesquera Albillo Mayor 2023
Sourced from old grapevines scattered and intertwined within Tempranillo plots at 900 meters altitude, these sweet golden grapes are harvested by hand. Fermented and aged on the lees (sur lie) with regular bâtonnage (stirring) for seven months in French oak, it delivers striking notes of cut hay, stone fruit, citrus, and white flowers with a persistent, creamy finish.
El Vínculo Alejairén Crianza 2023
Hailing from D.O. La Mancha, this wine honors a historic ninety year old vineyard in Paraje La Golosa. Because of the region’s sandy soils, these pre-phylloxera vines survived the devastating root-pest epidemic of the 19th century. Airén was traditionally utilized for brandy or simple blending, but this bottle proves its magnificent standalone aging potential. It undergoes an intentionally, slightly oxidative style, producing a rich, with a deep texture, and a long and heavy mouthfeel. I particularly enjoyed this expression.
The Masterclass Reds: From Fresh High-Altitude Terroir to Library Treasures
Moving into the reds, we truly experienced the signatures style of the family’s diverse estates. Highllightning their Tempranillo on almost all their creations. We tracked how these wines evolve over decades.
Condado de Haza Crianza 2022:
Grown on a sloping estate right next to the Duero River climbing up to 900 meters, this Tempranillo features a big American oak structure.
Tasting notes: Because of the cold, high-altitude nights, it reveals beautiful, unexpected eucalyptus and balsamic notes, making it remarkably fresh.
Dehesa la Granja 2020
Sourced from an estate where it rarely rains and weather swings from scorching hot to freezing cold. This library release, spent 18 months in American oak. It is a high-quality, sustainably grown absolute steal, showing tertiary notes of leather and sweet tobacco while retaining beautiful acidity.
Dehesa la Granja Dehesa 14 2009
This library wines showcased development with tasting notes of sweet tobacco, leather, and a remarkably fresh acidity. This was a great vintage in Ribera del Duero. It is great to drink now or hold a couple of years more.
Tinto Pesquera Reserva 2021
A benchmark for Ribera del Duero, showing flawless balance, velvety tannins, and deep black fruit flavors and balsamic undertones, wrapped in subtle baking spice.
Tinto Pesquera Millenium Gran Reserva 2018
Unlike the traditional American oak style, the legendary Millenium is aged exclusively in French oak during exceptional vintage years. The 2018 is powerful and tightly wound.
Tasting notes: Roasted coffee, dark cocoa, intense and structured
Tinto Pesquera Millenium Gran Reserva 2015 (Library Wine)
Meanwhile, the 2015 library release has softened into a gorgeous tapestry of dark cocoa, espresso, and seamless fruit.

Alenza Gran Reserva 2018
Named after the founders Alejandro and Esperanza, this Condado de Haza powerhouse is crafted using ancestral methods: whole-bunch fermentation with the stems in open tanks. Whole-bunch rustic complexity, wild bramble, savory herbs
Alenza Gran Reserva 2009 (Library Wine)
The 2009 library wine showcases how this stem inclusion translates into extraordinary structure, savory spice, and wild, rustic longevity.
Tinto Pesquera Janus Gran Reserva 2018
Named after the two-faced Roman god looking simultaneously at the past and the future, Janus is only made in the finest years from La Rendeja, a prized 30-year-old northern plot. Tasting the 2018 next to the mythic 2003 library wine was unforgettable. The 2003 behaves like a time capsule, still remarkably vibrant, laced with dried figs, exotic leather, and a seamless finish.
Tinto Pesquera Janus Gran Reserva 2003 (Library Wine)
Ultimate expression; dried figs, exotic spice, timeless
Whole Bunches and the Legend of Janus
The undisputed highlight of the afternoon was experiencing the library wines side-by-side with their modern releases. Witnessing how the stem-inclusion method of the Alenza 2009 preserved an energetic, savory tension after nearly two decades was a winemaking masterclass in itself.
Equally jaw dropping was the Janus 2003. It perfectly demonstrated why the late Alejandro Fernández’s decision to craft a bold, un-fined, un-filtered red would change the global perception of Spanish wine forever. The sheer longevity of these bottles proves that the Rivera sisters are guarding a truly historic legacy.
Standing Ovation to Familia Fernandez Rivera
Sitting down with Olga and MªCruz Fernández Rivera in New York was a poignant reminder that great wine is an intersection of family heritage, demanding terrain, and time. From the rare, old-vine white Albillo Mayor to the timeless depth of the Janus Gran Reserva, Familia Fernández Rivera continues to set the gold standard for Spanish viticulture. If you are looking to elevate your cellar or simply enjoy a bottle with profound soul, seeking out these current and library releases is an absolute must.
